Summer. The thought of summer conjures up images typically found in Corona ads. Long days, sticky sunsets, great company. It is only appropriate that indie-reggae-fusion tracks have successfully cemented themselves as the go-to soundtrack to accompany this imagery, with the likes of Ocean Alley dominating the summer sound. It is really exciting when a band comes along and picks away at the traditional elements that encompass this genre and turn it into something new.
With beginnings as a university cover band in Christchurch, NZ, Mako Road had some time to draw on various forms of inspiration to grasp and develop their own original sound. After releasing their debut EP ‘The Green Superintendent’ earlier in the year, they’ve been able to build off their previous effort and produce a clear sonic direction for their sophomore release. The lead single from their up-coming EP of the same name ‘Local Safari’, embodies the bands growth this year with all the glory of a sun soaked jangly guitar jam.
The four-piece borrow a leaf from the genre’s greats to deliver a well paced summer tune accompanied by rich vocals and sweet sweet harmonies. Through their cohesive songwriting, they are able to solidify this care-free soundscape and perfectly place it into the overall aural journey of their upcoming ‘Local Safari EP’ due for release next Friday.
On picking the track as the lead single, the band said “We chose ‘Local Safari’ as the single ‘cos it best sums up our attitude towards life at the moment. We get heaps out of travelling ‘round and meeting people, seeing new places and experiences. It’s been a huge part of this year for us, and we’ve all cleared our summer schedules so we can do more of it over the next few months.”
